Tobii Technology receives SEK 5 million for the development of language tools for disabled children
Tobii Technology has received SEK 5 million in research funding by VINNOVAS program Forska&Väx (research and grow). The money will be used to develop new communication solutions that can provide intellectually disabled children with a richer and more independent life.
Tobii is a leader in solutions for eye tracking, a technology that allows one to control a computer with only the eyes. One of its biggest markets is eye-controlled communication and communication aids for individuals with disabilities (AAK).
- We have been very successful with our previous products and the recently launched C-series looks very promising, says Marten Skogö, Development Manager and founder of Tobii. These products are targeted primarily towards those with CP, ALS or other motor impairments. However, there is a large and growing group of children with intellectual disabilities and in this area, there is very little research done on communication aids.
An important part of the work, therefore, is to create an understanding of the needs imposed on communication aids for children with special needs.
- Research-wise, this is a complex project, says Lars Lamhauge, International Product Manager at Tobii. How do you produce a piece of equipment, for example, where a child will have power over its own communication? How should a device be designed to cope with different physical abilities and cognitive levels in children? Issues such as these, are what we will try to answer, says Lars.
In order to develop the right solutions, specialists with knowledge in product design, interaction design, and linguistics are needed. As part of this project, Tobii will further strengthen its cooperation with Myra Industrial Design, the Ume University and the Catholic University of Applied Science in Freiburg, Germany.
Through Forska&Väx, we will build up the unique skills required to produce communication solutions for children with intellectual disabilities - long-term solutions that are easy to sell, own and support. This is a prerequisite for reaching out and simplifying the lives of as many children as possible, "says Marten Skogö.
