Tutorial at Interact 2009
Welcome to take part in our full day tutorial (6 hours) at Interact 2009, the 12th IFIP TC13 Conference in Human-Computer Interaction, August 24-28, 2009 in Uppsala, Sweden. On Monday August 24, 2009 (9 am to 5 pm) in Uppsala, Sweden.
The objective of the tutorial is to give an overview on how eye tracking is used and can be used as a method in human computer interaction research and especially in usability research. Eye tracking is a method that is increasingly being used to study usability issues in HCI contexts and it has been used as a tool for this over the last 20 years. Combining eye tracking with existing methods offers insights previously unavailable to researchers and practitioners, and allows us to develop new approaches and methodologies. This tutorial will give an overview on how eye tracking is used and can be used as a method in usability research. Additionally we will present a range of eye tracking metrics and explain how they can be interpreted in the context of interface design and usability evaluation. The tutorial will include an introduction to human vision and eye movements as well as eye tracking. The main focus of the tutorial is to explain what eye tracking can add to HCI and usability research and how it can be used as a method in these. The most common eye movement metrics in HCI and usability research will be discussed and there will also be hands-on eye tracking experiments.
Objectives
The objective of the tutorial is to give an overview on how eye tracking is used and can be used as a method in human computer interaction research and especially in usability research.
Intended audience
This tutorial is appropriate for researchers, practitioners and students. Participants should be familiar with behavioral research methodology. No prior knowledge of eye movement or eye tracking is required.
Content
The tutorial will cover the following topics:
- Human vision and eye movements
- What is eye tracking?
- What can eye tracking add to HCI & usability research?
- How to use eye tracking as a method in HCI & usability research studies?
- Eye movement metrics in HCI & usability research
- Case studies
- Hands-on eye tracking testing and analysis
Organisers' names and backgrounds
The main organizer of the tutorial is Tommy Strandvall who is Training Manager at Tobii Technology in Stockholm. He has many years of experience in academic and commercial research, especially media research; including audience research (TV and film), web, usability, user experience, and interactive media research. Tommy is an experienced speaker on eye tracking in human computer interaction and user experience and has for example presented at the following conferences: full day tutorial at NordiCHI 2008 in Lund, keynote speaker at User Experience Russia 2007 and 2008 in Moscow, half day tutorial at Measuring Behavior 2008 in Maastricht, speaker at Internet Marketing Conference 2007 & 2008 in Stockholm and Barcelona, and keynote speaker on Eye tracking in user experience research at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2007.
