Many of the software applications available today come with a CD and a license number needed in order to activate your copy on your computer. However, if you work in a school or school district with a large number of PCs and want a certain application to be available, purchasing, installing and activating the software can be time consuming and costly.

Economies of scale
If you need many copies of SymbolMate, the Tobii SymbolMate Network Package with floating licenses reduces your costs and can save you money. It is unlikely that everyone connected to the network will use the software at the same time and, therefore, a floating license scheme can reduce your investment and increase availability.
For example, purchasing 20 floating licenses for a school district costs the same as buying 50 single user licenses. The difference in cost is compensated by the increased availability. Using the 20 floating licenses and installing SymbolMate on all computers within the school makes SymbolMate accessible on all of them (and it could be hundreds of computers). As long as there are no more than 20 computers running SymbolMate at the same time, the user will not notice any difference. If you had used the 50 single user licenses the Software would only work on these 50 computers.
How does it work?
The license server manages licenses over a local area network (LAN). When an authorized computer wishes to run SymbolMate, the computer automatically requests/acquires a license from a central license server. If a license is available the application is allowed to run. When the user is finished with the application, the license is reclaimed by the license server and made available to other authorized users.
One floating license is needed for each concurrent user. For example, with one floating license, any number of users can have the software installed, but only one can use it at a time - the others must wait for them to finish. With 10 floating licenses, again, any number of users can have the software installed, but 10 can use it at the same time. When one user finishes with the software, another user can begin.
Installation is easy and simple
Preparing a floating network licensing scheme for Tobii SymbolMate can be done in two simple steps:
- Installing and configuring a license manager on a network server and supplying Tobii with the necessary server information.
- Configuring Tobii SymbolMate clients to connect to the license server, which can be done either remotely or by logging in as an Administrator.
