Eye Tracking by Tobii

Tobii’s aim, promise and challenge is to develop eye trackers combining excellent accuracy and precision with unrestrained and unobtrusive tracking that works on everyone under all conditions in an easy and automatic way.

Our key principles are to develop eye trackers that are:

  • Accurate and precise
  • Unrestrained and unobtrusive
  • Capable of robust tracking
  • Easy to use and automatic

It is actually fairly easy to create a simple eye tracker using corneal reflection. However, perfecting the technology to be accurate and precise, even during large user movements, for all types of people and all types of conditions, and to function automatically, is an extremely tough challenge.

Focus on quality

Tobii has created a test method that ensures eye tracker performance quality, facilitates interpretation of technical specifications and provides an objective comparison of different remote eye tracking systems.

Safety is a topic of major importance to us, and extensive work is done to ensure that our products are developed for safe use with human eyes.

Perfecting core technology

Every year, Tobii invests a considerable proportion of its revenue in research and development, most of which is earmarked for eye tracking technology and product development. Our R&D staff has 80 engineers, ten percent of whom have a PhD. The team comprises some of the world’s leading experts in optronics, image processing, mathematics, programming and, of course, eye tracking.

Tobii has revolutionized the field by developing eye trackers that work for basically any user without requiring any manual adjustments. Tobii eye trackers combine high accuracy and precision with an extremely high tolerance for large head movement and a variety of environments. The technology is compact enough to integrate into a wide range of devices and applications.

Patents and technology innovations

Tobii has an extensive patent portfolio to protect its unique proprietary technologies. These patents and patent applications cover aspects such as sensor technology, illumination methods, data transfer mechanisms and eye control interaction techniques.
