News in Tobii Analytics SDK 3.0 Release Candidate 1

Tobii Analytics SDK 3.0 Release Candidate (RC) 1 can be downloaded starting June 2011. It provides new capabilities and access to the full spectrum of Tobii eye tracking hardware features:

  • Support for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X
  • Support for more programming languages
  • More gaze data content, such as 3D coordinates for e.g. easier integration in 3D environments and development of gaze angle-based filters
  • Querying and setting the calibration plane for finer integration of SDK application and hardware, and visualization of the current setup
  • Real-time access to the head movement box to display accurate tracking status meters and correctly guide the user to a good position
  • Full access to and control over the high-resolution clock synchronization between stimuli computer and eye tracker enables new, more highly integrated setups and insight into the synchronization
  • Access to the firmware upgrade feature enables third-party applications to supply and perform firmware upgrades (so that applications can rely on very recent features)

The major difference between Tobii Analytics SDK 3.0 RC 1 and Analytics SDK 3.0 Beta is Mac OS X support.

Supported platforms and programming languages

Windows XP, Vista, Win7
(32- and 64-bit)

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
(32- and 64-bit)

Mac OS X 10.6
(32- and 64-bit)

.NET (C#) Yes Yes (Mono) Yes (Mono)
Python 2.6 Yes Yes No
C++ Yes Yes Yes
Objective C (Cocoa) No No Yes

Tobii SDK 3.0 RC 1 does not support the old COM interface as Tobii SDK 2.X did. Applications that build on the old SDK must be ported to the new SDK using any of the languages listed above.

Tools and code samples

Tools

  • Eye Tracker Browser – Browse available eye trackers, display information, upgrade them, and setup and configure X-type eye trackers.

C# samples

  • 3D Eyes – Visualization of the new powerful 3D eye and gaze data
  • Basic eye tracking sample – The basics presented in a way that is easy to understand, including detailed eye tracker browsing, calibration, and tracking status.
  • Upgrade tool sample – Demonstration of how to upgrade the eye tracker’s firmware.

Python samples

  • EyeTrackerBrowser.py – The basics presented in a way that is easy to understand, including detailed eye tracker browsing, calibration, and tracking status.
  • SyncWatcher.py – An example of how to use the built-in time synchronization mechanism.
  • Upgrade tool sample – Demonstration of how to upgrade the firmware of an eye tracker.

Supported eye trackers and firmware requirements

Tobii Analytics SDK 3.0 RC 1 supports the following eye trackers out-of-the-box: Tobii X60, Tobii X120, Tobii T60, Tobii T120, Tobii T60 XL, Tobii TX300 and Tobii IS-1.

Tobii Analytics SDK 3.0 RC 1 does not support the following eye trackers: Tobii 1750, Tobii X50, Tobii 2150, Tobii 1740 (D10), Tobii P10, C-Eye, and PCEye. Support for Tobii 1750, Tobii X50 and Tobii 2150 models will be added in a later firmware release.

An upgrade to an existing product in order to support the new SDK will never break compatibility with previous SDK versions. Applications written against previous SDKs will keep on working with all the above listed models. Applications using the new SDK and applications using previous SDKs will work with all models simultaneously.
