Gaze interaction – direct eye control and adaptive interfaces

Gaze start

Tobii Gaze™ introduces more ease, speed and perceptiveness between people and computers than ever before.

The benefits which gaze interaction delivers are instantly noticeable as many common point-and-click tasks become easier, faster and more intuitive. Tobii Gaze can be applied as a fundamental part of any computer software or user interface and is based on a core interaction principal: Eye gaze is a direct way of pointing that takes away the intermediary step of moving the mouse cursor with a mouse or a touchpad.

In future computers, more modalities will give users full flexibility to choose the most useful control for any given situation. For example, with a multimodal interface, you can point on your screen with Tobii Gaze, and then select with a keyboard button or touchpad.

The core principles of Tobii Gaze include:

Gaze Select: Selecting objects is the most commonly used task in a standard computer user interface. With Gaze Select you simply look at an object and use the touchpad, a key on the keyboard, a gesture or a voice command to select it, which makes it very fast.

Gaze Scroll: With Gaze Scroll content in a window will automatically follow as you move through the information with your gaze. Just hold down a key on the keyboard to let the computer know when, and it scrolls the page in the direction you are looking in a seemingly magical way.

Gaze Pan: Gaze Pan enables you to move around in an image and automatically center it to the point of gaze. Simply hold down a key and the point of the image that you are looking at will move towards the center without the slightest effort.

Gaze Zoom: When you use the mouse to zoom in a traditional interface the process is repetitive and needs much manual adjustments. With Gaze Zoom you use a scroll wheel or a pinch gesture to issue the zoom command. The computer automatically focuses to the point where you are looking, resulting in a seamless zooming experience.

Gaze Navigate: With Gaze Navigate you can swap between windows, switch to new slides or move within a document in one fluid movement. A simple key selection in combination with your eye gaze is all it takes. Removing much of the mouse movements and clicking actions navigating becomes fast and motionless.
