New AOI tool

Tobii Studio 3.0 includes a new AOI tool that handles both static and dynamic (moving and transforming) AOIs in a broad range of stimuli.

Area of interest (AOI) is a user-defined area in a stimulus for measuring looking behavior. Researchers use AOIs to gather statistics for eye tracking metrics—like how often and for how long participants looked at areas of particular interest in a stimulus.

The following types of dynamic media are supported:

  • Movies (AVI and WMW)
  • Screen recordings
  • Web recordings
  • Glasses recordings
  • External / Scene camera

The shapes and behaviors of dynamic AOIs are defined in keyframes using standard shapes available in the tool: ellipses, rectangles and polygons. In between keyframes, Tobii Studio interpolates the shape and position of the AOI.

In dynamic content such as movies, objects disappear and reappear from time to time. To handle this, AOIs have a state called Activation to instruct Tobii Studio when to collect gaze data and when not to. For instance, when an object tracked by an AOI disappears or is occluded by another object, the Activation state must be turned off. Consequentially, when the object reappears, the Activation state has to be reset to on. Gaze data within a non-active interval for an AOI will not be taken into account when calculating AOI statistics.

Once the dynamic AOI has been set up, the same eye tracking metrics and features, like AOI Grouping, are available for dynamic AOIs as for static AOIs.

Improved Data Export

The Data Export tool has a completely new user interface and improved workflow in Tobii Studio 3.0.

Each gaze data sample is classified into three gaze event types: fixations, saccades and unclassified. When combined with Tobii Studio fixation filters it allows you to perform a straight-forward saccade analysis.

Batch export multiple recordings or media into one single file or multiple files. Many recordings or media can be exported into a single file. Furthermore, it is now easier to open outputs in external tools such as Excel and SPSS.

Studio Viewer

Tobii Studio 3.0 includes a completely new Studio Viewer designed with focus on stability and improved usability. It allows researchers to remotely view a test session over a LAN connection and includes a bandwidth indicator for performance control.
