Objective evaluation of gaze location patterns using eye tracking during cystoscopy and artificial intelligence-assisted lesion detection

Atsushi Ikeda, Kazuya Izumi, Kensuke Katori, Hirokazu Nosato, Keita Kobayashi, Shuhei Suzuki, Shuya Kandori, Masaru Sanuki, Yoichi Ochiai & Hiroyuki Nishiyama

Background: The diagnostic accuracy of cystoscopy varies according to the knowledge and experience of the performing physician. In this study, we evaluated the difference in cystoscopic gaze location patterns between medical students and urologists and assessed the differences in their eye movements when simultaneously observing conventional cystoscopic images and images with lesions detected by artificial intelligence (AI). Methodology: Eye-tracking measurements were performed, and observation patterns of participants (24 medical students and 10 urologi...

User Experience and Workload Evaluation in Robot-Assisted Virtual Reality Welding Training

Yang Ye, Thanakon Uthai, Pengxiang Xia, Tianyu Zhou & Jing Du

Remote virtual training for tasks that involve intensive human motor participation is gaining popularity in the emerging education 4.0 era. However, the user experience and the underlying cognitive characteristics while facing the state-of-the-art training platform are less understood. This paper implements a robot-assisted virtual reality training system for welding training. The virtual reality system creates an immersive environment, and the robotic device provides the necessary physical interaction. A total of 28 participants who had no prior welding...

A Multimodality VR Training System for Future Electrical Vehicle Emergency Responses

Ziming Liu, Tolulope Sanni, Yangming Shi & Jun Liu

The human society’s mobility tool is shifting the paradigm from combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles (EV). The wide adoption of EVs will benefit the sustainability of society by improving fuel efficiency, lowering fuel and maintenance costs, and reducing carbon emissions. However, the rise of EVs also brings challenges, particularly in EV emergency responses, in which EV fires burn hotter and longer than traditional vehicle fires, and most first responders are not well prepared. This paper introduces a multimodality virtual reality (VR) traini...

Expert Performance in Action Anticipation: Visual Search Behavior in Volleyball Spiking Defense from Different Viewing Perspectives

Ruihan Zhu, Deze Zou, Keji Wang & Chunmei Cao

Volleyball spiking requires defenders to possess exceptional anticipatory skills. However, most volleyball defense video eye-tracking studies have used fixed or off-court perspectives, failing to replicate real-world environments. This study explored different visual search behaviors between elite and novice volleyball players from various viewing perspectives using video eye tracking. We examined spiking anticipation in 14 competitive elite, 13 semi-elite, and 11 novice players. We captured spiking videos from three on-court perspectives using GoPro cam...

Moderators of training response to a driver inattention training program for teens with ADHD

Annie A. Garner, Jeffery N. Epstein, James Peugh, Leanne Tamm, Adam W. Kiefer, Ryan P. MacPherson, John O. Simon & Donald L. Fisher

Long-glances away from the roadway—those that exceed 2 s—contribute significantly to driving risk among teen drivers with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In a randomized controlled trial, teen drivers with ADHD assigned to a driver training program (enhanced FOcused Concentration and Attention Learning; FOCAL +) to reduce long-glances away from the roadway demonstrated significantly reduced rates of long-glances and improved simulated driving performance up to 6-months post training compared to teens in a modified conventional driver's t...

Development of performance and learning rate evaluation models in robot-assisted surgery using electroencephalography and eye-tracking

Somayeh B. Shafiei, Saeed Shadpour, Farzan Sasangohar, James L. Mohler, Kristopher Attwood & Zhe Jing

The existing performance evaluation methods in robot-assisted surgery (RAS) are mainly subjective, costly, and affected by shortcomings such as the inconsistency of results and dependency on the raters’ opinions. The aim of this study was to develop models for an objective evaluation of performance and rate of learning RAS skills while practicing surgical simulator tasks. The electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye-tracking data were recorded from 26 subjects while performing Tubes, Suture Sponge, and Dots and Needles tasks. Performance scores were generated ...
