Visualization Design and Color Preference in Medical Application Interfaces for Older Adults: The Impact on Cognitive Load and User Experience

septembre 27, 2025Xiaotong He, Yuqian Yang, Ruojuan Li & Xiaodong Gong

The increasing digitization of healthcare demands that electronic medical applications prioritize usability for older adults. This study investigated the influence of visualization design and color preference in digital medical reports on older adults’ cognitive load and user experience (UX). The first experiment (n = 31) compared a baseline, a color visualization, and a graphical visualization interface. By measuring both objective metrics, like task time and Pupil Research diameter, and subjective feedback, the results clearly indicated that the color ...

Enhancing Efficiency in Medical Simulations: The Impact of Objective Feedback on User Interface Design

septembre 9, 2025Ava Knaf, Sanaz Motamedi, Jason Z. Moore & Scarlett R. Miller

Despite central venous catheterization being a very prominent procedure, a significant portion of patients still experience complications. These complications are directly linked to the physician’s experience. To combat this problem, more advanced training is needed for residents. However, due to the mandated limited work hours of residents, the training needs to be efficient. The goal of this paper is to identify how the addition of real-time and post-performance feedback to a training Simulator setup increases the efficiency of learning. Results show t...

Fine-tuning deep neural network for saliency prediction in movie poster documents

septembre 1, 2025Kristian Adi Nugraha, Igi Ardiyanto & Sunu WibiramaICT Express

Saliency prediction models are typically trained on natural images, focusing on features such as shape and color. However, predicting saliency in images with text is challenging because the human brain processes text differently than it processes visual objects. To address this research gap, we fine-tuned a saliency model to improve the accuracy of images containing text, specifically, movie posters. Our fine-tuned model—based on GSGNet and TranSalNet—outperformed the original models in predicting the saliency map for movie posters. The experimental resu...

The Effect of Icon Style and Color on Cognitive Efficiency in Traditional Culture App

août 6, 2025Yinghui Fu, Fanghao Song, Junqing Guo, Yong Wang & Yan Liu

The icon design of Chinese traditional cultural app is different from that of common app in terms of graphics, semantics and abstraction, which would reduce cognitive efficiency of Human-Machine Interaction (HMI). Based on eye-tracking technology, this paper qualitatively and quantitatively analyzes the cognitive efficiency of functional icons of traditional cultural app. According to the experimental results, we analyzed the icon style design problems in the app interface, built a recommended chart for the color usage of icons under the Practical Color ...

Design Graph Guided Element Importance-Aware Layout Generation With Multimodality Cascade Transformer

août 1, 2025Qiuyun Zhang, Bin Guo, Lina Yao, Xiaotian Qiao, Xiaotian Qiao, Hao Wang, Ying Zhang & Zhiwen YuIEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems

Graphic designs are pervasive in our daily lives and widely used to communicate information hierarchically to humans. To achieve this, the layout plays an essential role in guiding readers to understand the importance of different elements and comprehend the content. To deal with the rapidly increasing demands of graphic designs, recent studies attempt to automatically generate layouts based on category information and spatial relations, often resulting in layouts with poor communication quality. In this article, we make the first attempt to explore elem...

Effects of different visual styles on elderly users’ interaction behavior in smart sofa interfaces

août 1, 2025Jiayu Tang, Xinghao Liu, Chengmin Zhou & Jake KanerBioResources

The usability of wood-based smart furniture interfaces for elderly users remains a critical challenge in aging-in-place solutions. This study aims to explore the most effective visual presentation styles of sofa illustrations in the smart sofa mobile app interface, with the goal of reducing cognitive load and enhancing the interaction experience for elderly users. To achieve this, we evaluated the cognitive responses of elderly users to different visual presentation styles through eye-tracking experiments and correctness analysis. As the results show, th...

Consistency is key: Evaluation of and recommendations for thermostat usability testing

août 1, 2025Kabir Patel, Ruth Tamas, William O’Brien, Simin Kianpour rad & Philip AgeeBuilding and Environment

Thermostat usability is known to affect building energy use and comfort, however, standardized testing approaches have yet to be defined. Experts have called for thermostats to be graded and certified based on their usability. Guidance to inform a standardized evaluation strategy is currently lacking. This continues to undermine the comparability of thermostat usability metrics. This investigation performs a mixed-methods evaluation of three common Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) methods: direct observation, think-aloud, and eye-tracking. A sample of 48 ...

Research on function-interface design of old and antique Hongmu furniture E-commerce platform in the second-hand economy environment

août 1, 2025Yuhan Li, Yu Feng, Lei Fu & Jiufang LvBioResources

To optimize the user experience of an e-commerce platform for old and antique hongmu furniture, this study explored the functional design and interface elements of such platforms within the context of the second-hand economy. First, through qualitative research, the general needs of users were identified. Then, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the priorities of different types of needs were ranked. After expanding the functional indicators for each type, the Kano model was used to identify the specific attributes of these indicators. Then the ...

Exploring the Use of Eye Tracking to Evaluate Usability Affordances: A Case Study on Assistive Device Design

    juillet 29, 2025Vicente Bayarri-Porcar, Alba Roda-Sales, Joaquín L. Sancho-Bru & Margarita VergaraJournal of Environmental Psychology

This study explores the application of Eye-Tracking technology for the ergonomic evaluation of assistive device usability. Sixty-four participants evaluated six jar-opening devices in a two-phase study. First, the participants’ gaze was recorded while they viewed six rendered pictures of assistive devices, each shown in two different versions: with and without rubber in the grip area. Second, the participants physically interacted with the devices in a hands-on usability task. In both phases, participants rated the devices according to six usability affo...

The Impact of Interface Visual Complexity on the Visual Behavior of Elderly Users in Mobile Audiobook Application Recommendation Interfaces

juillet 27, 2025Puhong Li, Shuqi Dai, Yusheng Li, Fengran Lin, Zhilin Wang & Chengbo Yang

The visual complexity of mobile interfaces presents a significant challenge to enhancing information retrieval efficiency and user experience among elderly users, as it influences their visual behavior. Using the main interface of a mobile audiobook recommendation application as a case study, this research categorizes interface visual complexity into two types: quantitative visual complexity and layout visual complexity. An evaluation model, combining both objective data and subjective assessments, was developed through eye-tracking experiments to examin...

Navigating participation: how website design impacts the digital divide in political engagement

    juillet 26, 2025Amir Schreiber, Israel Waismel-Manor & Jaime Settle

Over the last two decades political parties and candidates have shifted mof their functions and activities online. As individuals differ greatly in their technological competence, this shift generates a democratic digital divide. Most of the research focuses on the characteristics of those who are disadvantaged by this divide, exploring the role of Internet literacy programs to ameliorate the problem. However, little attention has been paid to an alternative solution: improving the infrastructure of online communication itself. Employing hidden eye track...

Effective digital content that appeals to diverse audience segments is challenging due to varying expectations across generations. Differences in design priorities and evaluation criteria create an opportunity for applying analytical methods based on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). This study explores how different marketing approaches and types of advertising align with generational preferences, with the aim of identifying the most effective strategy for each generation with the use of perceptual experiment and eye-tracking. The PROMETHEE metho...
