Event details

Join us for a dynamic and insightful event hosted by Tobii in partnership with Royal Haskoning DHV. This event will explore how innovative technologies, particularly
eye tracking, are transforming driver training and road safety.

Throughout the day, industry experts and Tobii customers will share their experiences and findings from using eye tracking technology to enhance various aspects of driver education. Presentations will cover a diverse range of topics, including:

  • Railway Industry: Using eye tracking to understand the viewing behavior in remote train operations in the rail context.

  • Blue Light Driver Training: Insights into enhancing specialized training for blue light drivers with eye tracking.

  • Truck Driver Training: Leveraging eye-tracking to address the unique challenges faced by commercial truck drivers.

  • ADAS: Challenges of eye tracking testing in real world conditions for safer roads.

  • Digital Dashboards: Optimizing human-machine interfaces in modern transportation modes.

In the afternoon, the event will shift towards hands-on workshops, where you will have the opportunity to test and experience Tobii's cutting-edge products firsthand.

Our experts will demonstrate how eye tracking technology can be seamlessly integrated into training programs to elevate safety standards. Additionally, there will be dedicated time for informal discussions with Tobii's research scientists, offering attendees a chance to dive deeper into the science and application of eye tracking in the field of road safety.

This event is an excellent opportunity for professionals and organizations involved in road safety, driver training, and technology development to connect, learn, and contribute to a safer future on the road.

The talks

Insight into viewing behavior: dealing with the power and limitations of eye tracking research in rail context

Speaker: Dr. ir. Ellemieke van Doorn, Senior Research Leader and Team Lead Human-Machine Interaction at Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS).

NS, the main operator of passenger rail transport in the Netherlands, has the ambition to keep travel safe, attractive and affordable. Limited space for expansion on the busy rail network, tightness in the labor market, and financial challenges to keep train travel affordable require technical innovations that change the work of drivers, conductors and mechanics.

In the various phases of the development of technological innovations and changing working methods, human machine interaction research provides important insights. Research focuses on providing advice and specifications for design choices and aims at identification of possible mitigation measures and training needs.

Additionally, these insights can illuminate the impact of changes in task performance, such as those required for efficient timetable planning. Selecting the right research question and research methods for each phase is essential. It is important to understand the power and limitations of both subjective research methods and objective research tools such as the eye tracker.

This presentation will discuss these topics in more detail. After which insight is provided into the practice of research into viewing behavior in remote train operations, inspection by mechanics, and monitoring the departure process from the driver's cabin.

The eyes don't see what the brain does not want you to do!

Speaker: Ron Foppen, Owner of Ayonas BV

As traffic grows and becomes more complex, the training and education for drivers of fire trucks differs greatly compared to 20 years ago. Their performance depends on multiple factors, like traffic demand, conflict situations, support tools, situational awareness and mental workload.

Looking at the projected future of the increase in traffic and its influence on the drivers, a valid solution could be the increase of automation of driving protocols in driving with blue lights. Automated driving procedures, mental workload and preparing for situations like accidents in combination with driving is a challenging environment. The drivers experience a change in physical and mental state.

For firefighters collecting information is a necessary key element. Due to their mental state, they experience difficulties collecting information in dense situations. By using the Tobii glasses, we are able to give the drivers more input on their behaviour and the way they gather necessary information about the traffic situation. This valuable information shows both the conscious and subconscious behaviour of the driver. information about conscious and subconscious behavioural patterns is a lifesaving matter for the driver of a fire truck.

NextGen Transportation: Safe, digital and fun!

Speaker: Janneke Nijsing, Project leader Connected Transport Amsterdam Logistics

More data leads to better truck-drivers instead of more data leads to more applications! Generally we think about more data for more applications to realize efficiency in transport, but what does this mean for the truck driver? And what is the information-need from the individual driver?

Thinking differently with data: not what applications can we create with it, but how can we enable drivers to perform their current processes and applications better? And the role of HMI glasses in this transition?

Advancing safety via on-road evaluation

Speaker: Mario Torres, CEO and Co-Founder of IVEX

IVEX has become a pioneer in developing cutting-edge tools for the validation and testing of advanced driver assistance and integrated various sensors that give additional insights into validating ADAS systems like Driver Monitoring System (DMS), eye tracking being one of them. In this presentation, Mario will talk about the challenges of running eye tracking testing in real world conditions for safer roads.

Eye on HMI, digital dashboard supporting UX/UI decision making

Speakers: Maria Oskina, Product Owner Eye on HMI, HaskoningDHV, and Peter Boom, Business Development Director, Business Owner Eye on HMI, HaskoningDHV

Eye on HMI, a novel product that harnesses eye tracking technology and AI to enhance user control, UX/UI of human-machine interfaces in modern transportation modes.

In this interactive master class, we will demonstrate the dynamic digital dashboard, translating data into human factors insights, supporting the decision making regarding optimal UX/UI.
