Seeing to Decide: Visual Attention in High-Stress, High-Consequence Operations

Every decision begins with what the person sees, but conventional video rarely tells us where their visual attention was actually directed.

A head or body-worn camera can show where someone was facing. Eye tracking provides a much deeper perspective, revealing where gaze was directed, which information was available and what may have influenced the decision that followed.

In this engaging and highly visual session, Lee Waters will draw on eye-tracking footage and applied examples from elite sport, officiating and high-consequence operational environments. He will demonstrate how gaze data can reveal the hidden processes behind rapid decision-making and explain why a decision that appears obvious in hindsight may have looked very different to the person experiencing it in real time.

Attendees will explore how eye tracking can:

• Add vital context when reviewing decisions and performance

• Identify the visual cues performers prioritise or overlook

• Move debriefing beyond simply judging the outcome

• Turn eye-tracking insight into practical feedback and training
