Beyond Driver Monitoring: Why trust is the future of interior sensing

Automated driving is advancing rapidly, but the biggest challenge isn’t building smarter technology — it’s building technology that people trust. As the industry moves toward higher levels of automation, interior sensing must evolve from simply monitoring drivers to understanding them. That means knowing not only whether someone is paying attention, but whether they are ready, willing, and able to safely take control when it matters most. 

At InCabin USA in Detroit, I had the opportunity to speak with OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers and technology leaders about one of the most important transitions happening in automotive today: the move from monitoring drivers to supporting safe collaboration between humans and automation.

For years, interior sensing has been driven by regulation and safety requirements.
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring Systems (OMS) have become essential technologies, helping improve road safety while supporting compliance with evolving legislation around the world. 

This progress is something the industry should be proud of. But as vehicles become increasingly automated, compliance alone is no longer enough. 

The next challenge isn’t adding more warnings or more sensors. It’s creating systems that people trust.

The future of interior sensing isn't about watching drivers. It's about understanding when to help, when to stay silent, and when to enable a safe, trusted transition between human and vehicle.

Monitoring isn’t the goal 

When most people hear the phrase “driver monitoring,” they immediately think about being watched. 

That’s understandable. 

After all, most of us genuinely believe we’re good drivers. Decades of behavioral research have shown that people consistently rate their own driving ability above average. It’s part of human nature. 

So when a vehicle appears to question our attention or our judgement, the first reaction is rarely appreciation. More often, it’s resistance. 

This presents an important challenge for our industry. 

Interior sensing should never feel like surveillance. It should feel like a trusted partner — working quietly in the background, stepping in only when it genuinely adds value. 

As automation evolves, this distinction becomes increasingly important. If drivers don’t trust the system, they won’t rely on it when it matters most. 

The move from monitoring to takeover readiness 

The transition from Level 2 to Level 3 automated driving fundamentally changes the relationship between the driver and the vehicle. 

In Level 2 systems, the driver remains responsible for driving while the vehicle assists. In Level 3, however, the vehicle can take responsibility for certain driving tasks before handing control back to the driver when required. 

That handover may sound simple, but it’s one of the most complex moments in automated driving. True takeover readiness goes far beyond asking whether someone is looking at the road. 

Instead, it requires understanding three critical dimensions simultaneously: 

  • Availability – Is the driver physically able to take control? 

  • Capability – Are they mentally prepared and able to respond? 

  • Intent – Have they recognized the request and started to re-engage with the driving task? 

Only when these three elements come together can a vehicle confidently determine whether a safe handover is possible. 

This is where interior sensing moves beyond monitoring and becomes an essential part of the automated driving experience.

Building on a proven foundation 

Innovation in automotive isn’t measured by how many new features we can introduce each year. It’s measured by what can be validated, scaled, and trusted over the lifetime of a vehicle. That’s why, at Tobii Autosense, we’ve focused first on building a strong foundation.

Context changes everything 

One of the biggest limitations of traditional driver monitoring is that it often evaluates behavior without understanding the situation. 

Imagine approaching a busy motorway merge or a complex roundabout. A responsible driver naturally checks mirrors, looks left, looks right and scans surrounding traffic. From the perspective of an interior camera alone, these movements could appear to be distraction. 

In reality, they’re exactly what safe driving requires. This is why context matters. 

By combining information from inside the cabin with information from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), interior sensing gains a much richer understanding of what’s actually happening. 

Instead of asking, “Is the driver looking away?” the system can ask a much more meaningful question: 

Does this behavior make sense for the current driving situation?” 

That shift dramatically improves both safety and user experience. 

Rather than interrupting the driver unnecessarily, the system can provide support only when it’s genuinely needed.

From sensor fusion to the evolving cabin 

For me, the future of interior sensing is about reducing uncertainty. 

The automotive industry has already demonstrated the value of sensor fusion in ADAS. No one expects a vehicle to rely on a single external sensor to understand the world around it. 

The same principle applies inside the vehicle. 

Combining gaze, posture, occupancy and behavioral signals with external driving context creates a much more complete understanding of both the people inside the vehicle and the environment around them. 

This is what we call Holistic Sensing.  
And it’s an important step toward what we see as the Evolving Cabin

The Evolving Cabin is more than a collection of intelligent features. It’s a human-centric environment that learns, adapts, and anticipates while respecting privacy and maintaining trust. Instead of constantly reacting, it understands when to help. 

Just as importantly, it understands when not to. 

Trust is what unlocks automation 

Much of the discussion around automated driving focuses on what vehicles can do. Equally important is how people experience those capabilities and whether they trust them enough to rely on them. The future of automation will not be determined solely by advances in sensors, software, or computing power. It will depend on how effectively vehicles and humans work together. 

As the industry moves toward Level 3 and beyond, takeover experiences must become intuitive, predictable, and reassuring. Achieving that vision requires more than monitoring drivers. It requires understanding the driver, understanding the environment, and understanding the relationship between the two. When those elements come together, automation becomes less about supervision and more about collaboration.

The next chapter of automated driving won't be defined by how much technology we can add. It will be defined by how naturally people and vehicles can work together.
