Eye tracking medical research Q1 2026 insights

Eye tracking supported research across screening, diagnosis, and rehabilitation by turning gaze and pupil behavior into measurable clinical signals. Studies used it to distinguish cognitive impairment, compare endoscopy visibility, assess reading under simulated maculopathy, and quantify eye movements in strabismus, dementia, and vestibular care. Across these publications, it also helped evaluate task performance and reveal compensatory strategies that are difficult to capture with conventional methods.

Effectiveness of changing stimulus frequency and intensity of sound for evaluating hearing by monitoring pupil responses

March 8, 2026Maria Paola Tramonti Fantozzi, Antonino Crivello, Davide La Rosa, Ottavia Marconi, Mario Milazzo, Diego Manzoni, Giacomo Fiacchini & Luca BruschiniBiomedical Signal Processing and Control

Assessing hearing through the pupil dilation response (PDR) to sound offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional audiometry, particularly useful in individuals unable to provide behavioral responses. However, reliable detection of sound-evoked PDRs is limited by variability in pupil size and the risk of false positives (Type I Errors). This study investigated whether pseudo-random variation of sound frequency and amplitude enhances the correspondence between PDR detection and sound perception in normal-hearing subjects. To improve reliability, epoch...

Human accommodative visuomotor function is driven by contrast through ON and OFF pathways and is enhanced in myopia

February 18, 2026Urusha Maharjan, Hamed Rahimi-Nasrabadi, Sabina Poudel, Farzaneh Olianezhad, Jianzhong Jin, Mitchell W. Dul & Jose-Manuel AlonsoCell Reports

The human eyes are continuously adjusting refractive power, vergence angle, and pupil diameter when exploring the visual environment. Adjustment errors in these visuomotor functions reduce the stimulus contrast driving ON and OFF retinal pathways, and ON retinal pathways become weaker, slower, and less sensitive in refractive disorders such as myopia. Here, we demonstrate that, in addition to these sensory deficits, myopes also have deficits in visuomotor functions driven by ON and OFF pathways during lens accommodation. We show that humans with myopia h...

BackgroundMobility in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) is strongly context-dependent. Clinic-based assessments provide only brief snapshots under controlled conditions and may not reflect everyday functional capacity. Wearable sensors enable continuous free-living monitoring, yet most studies use unimodal signals and simple threshold-based walking detection. Multimodal sensing, combining surface electromyography (sEMG) with inertial measurement units (IMUs), can offer a more complete picture of mobility in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Therefore, devel...
